This production had a very difficult history starting with the try-out at Bristol Hippodrome, when the first preview lasted over four hours. There were backstage arguments among the writers and director and during the London previews the original director Eric Thompson was replaced by Alan Ayckbourn. Betty Marsden did not even make it to London. Her part as Aunt Dahlia was cut whilst the show was still in Bristol. The show was savaged by the critics and lasted a month.
Twenty years later, after the dust had settled, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Alan Ayckbourn had another look at the show and revised and simplified it. This time under the title of “By Jeeves” it had a more successful West End run and also appeared on Broadway.
