The Gay Dog

This ‘farcical comedy’ was a revised version of Joseph Colton’s play A DOG FOR DELMONT, presented at the Q Theatre in February 1951 [qv] – in which the central family was called Simpson rather than Gay.

The character played on the initial tour dates by Sybil Wise had been dropped by the time the play reached London. The West End run totalled 276 performances. A 45-minute excerpt – “televised from the stage of the Piccadilly Theatre, London at a special performance before an invited audience” – was screened by the BBC on 22nd August 1952.

A radio adaptation, with Wilfred Pickles and Megs Jenkins, was heard on the BBC Home Service on 2nd January 1954, and a film version, with Pickles, Jenkins and three other members of the original cast, was released in June the same year.
