This didn’t take place at the Empire Theatre according to my relatives-this playwright was my great uncle Johnny. It took place in the Mechanics Institute which had a large stage and auditorium. The railway workers I think put the money or some of it to build the institute . It had a large state of the art library for those times and reading rooms , exhibition hall/s, conference rooms and sundry offices. It still stands today (just about) in a perilous state. I think Uncle Johnny was a bit frustrated because they all kept forgetting their lines standing in the wrong places and not coming on at the right time. They would have had very broad Wiltshire accents and were still using thees and thine living in the countryside. Incidentally,as far as I know, Uncle Johnny died when his house burnt down. He lived in a big house with only a grassed lane in the middle of the fields. As the custom was, he put a tree trunk on the fire for the winter, etc . As the tree burnt you pushed it further onto the fire. One night he forgot. He is said to have lost all his money gambling with the farmhands and drinking.
