Last five observations
- To Royal Shakespeare Company production of Henry V, by William Shakespeare, Aldwych Theatre, London, 27th May 1965 (press night): “I dressed Robert Marsden as Chorus, and before I came along he had effectively taken over from Eric Porter. Eric Porter’s returns were occasional; he was in “The Jew of Malta” at Stratford. The original plan has become the official record, but Robert never played Erpingham other than in rehearsal – we stayed friends over the next forty years, so I heard all about it. John Malcolm, and then Richard Moore played Erpingham. Also – Davyd Harries took over Gower from John Normington. Terence Rigby had a longish absence, when Edward Clayton played Bates (doubling it with Bardolph). Paul Hardwick had absences, when Terence Rigby played Pistol. Patience Collier had absences, when Tamara Fuerst played Alice, and (I am fairly sure) Diana Bishop played Mistress Quickly. Peter Donaldson and David David left during the run (I met both Peter, later an announcer, and John Malcolm at other times, but not during my period on that show). I was quite unaware that Isla Blair was ever in that “Henry V” . Could her name possibly be an RSC transcription mistake for Iain Blair, who was at the Aldwych at that time? She was not otherwise with the company then.”
- To Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare, Aldwych Theatre, London, 13th June 1963 (press night): “ Ian Hewitson left during the run at the Aldwych, and Ian Lindsay took over Flute. Richard Arthure also left during the run. Robert Lloyd (later Robert Langdon Lloyd, obviously because of the operatic bass) joined during the run, to play “Unnamed Parts”. He later became a popular actor with Peter Brook.”
