Selected for the 1966 National Youth Theatre London season and was in the cast of Anthony and Cleopatra with Helen Mirren as Cleopatra. Decided not to go back the following season but to continue my studies for university. To H M Tennent Ltd production of My Fair Lady, by Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe, and George Bernard Shaw, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, 1961 - 1963: “My godfather who was a senior civil servant took me to see this from a box. The only person I knew was James Hayter who had appeared in a lot of films. Fascinatingly he is related to my wife’s sister in law!”
To production of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford-Upon-Avon, 1966 - 1967: “Went to see this when in the 6^th form at Carlisle Grammar School. The ghost was quite something to behold and Warner was moody and magnificent – just right for teenagers. I believe he made a film shortly after where his character was a kind of modern Hamlet”
To National Theatre production of Trelawny of the Wells, by Arthur Wing Pinero, The Old Vic, London and Chichester Festival Theatre, Main Theatre, 13th July 1965 - 1966: “Went to see this when in the National Youth Theatre in London in summer 1966. Have always remembered seeing Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens acting together in my youth but didn’t realise what a magnificent cast it was – though for many their time was still to come. I think Derek Jacobi was pretty fresh from the National Youth Theatre. We had a flat in the same building as Barrie Rutter, Malcolm Storry and Tim Dalton – all great company. Long ago and far away.”
