Last five observations
- To production of Laburnum Grove, by J B Priestley, Duke of York's Theatre, London, Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, and other locations, 22nd August 1977 - 31st January 1978: “I was in the out of town try-out which played in Harrogate in 1986. Arthur Lowe was a joy but he was so funny that I couldn’t keep a straight face and was dropped from the London production. (The play closed after a short run but by then I was in Once a Catholic which ran for five years). Was saddened to see that the delightful Debbie Watling (I played her boyfriend) passed a way a few years ago.”
- To Birmingham Repertory Company production of Action Replay, by Fay Weldon, The Studio, Birmingham Repertory Theatre (1971 onwards), 22nd February - 24th March 1979: “Oh the lovely Mary Tamm … I would have been bitter about Arwen Holm but she died soon after.”
- To production of Bloody Poetry, by Howard Brenton, Manhattan Theatre Club, started 18th December 1986: “The director, who later rose to greatness, had no idea what she was doing.”
- To National Theatre production of John Gabriel Borkman, by Henrik Ibsen, The Old Vic, London and National Theatre - Lyttelton, National Theatre, started 28th January 1975: “I had hear that Richardson was struggling with the role and wanted to see what it was like to what a successful actor in crisis. It was odd. He strode about the place with a degree of irritation, which is almost right for the role but not enough to illustrate the character’s deep inner conflict. Wendy Hiller was very grand and Peggy Ashcroft was charming if not exactly what Ibsen had in mind. The whole enterprise was rather inert…. very later Peter Hall”
