Observations
-
This was one of actor Richard Harris’ first parts, a minor role playing Doctor Ross, and the lead actor, Edwards, made no attempt to conceal his disdain for the Irish and Harris in particular. Harris vowed to get revenge for the abuse he had had to endure during rehearsals, and on opening night, when his turn came to respond to Edward’s entreaty “How goes the Queen?” to which he should have responded “ My Lord, the Queen is quite dead” allowing Edwards to launch into the famous soliloquy, Harris simply shrugged his shoulders and said “She’s fine. She’ll be out in about 10 minutes”.
