The play was suggested by the Constance Kent case. The character of Inspector Rough (who appeared in “Gaslight”) was modelled on Inspector Cuff in Wilkie Collins’ “The Moonstone”. Inspector Cuff was in turn based on the real life Inspector Whicher who solved the Kent case.
