Observations

  1. On 18th January 2013 at 6:13 p.m., Ruth Richardson noted:

There must have been an earlier tour of this play not yet recorded here, as I saw it as a splendid school treat at my London state school in a grim part of North Kensington in the year I left, which was 1960–61. I think it was a Christmas play, and we all loved it, especially as the school was divided horizontally, girls upstairs and boys down, and we were NEVER allowed to mix with the boys – playgrounds were on opposite sides of the building etc! Never the twain shall meet, as they say. On this occasion, we were led down and had to sit cross-legged on the floor of the boys’ great hall, and the play was staged at one end. I remember a beautiful woman whose skin was Green & Gold, and a sense of a magical atmosphere I now associate with The Tempest. I cannot remember the story, though! The 1950s were a very bleak time to be a poor kid in a slum, and this play was a splendid experience that I have never forgotten. I assume that the London County Council initiative, and there might be records somewhere. So happy to find that my memory of the play’s title brought up this site!
