Bagnall Harris
I only knew Bagnall Harris briefly in the winter of 1959 . Bagnall Harris designed beautiful stage sets at the Old Vic during the 1930s . In 1959 , newly graduated from The Webber Douglas School of Dramatic Art , I was given a job as an ASM at The Guildford Repertory . It was just before Christmas and the up and coming production was the Christmas Pantomime Cinderella . I was detailed to help the scenic artist Bagnall Harris , assembling flats and and painting them with size . Bagnall Harris was a quiet , kind , friendly whom it was a pleasure to assist , even more so to watch him paint, he painted the prettiest of sets for the Pantomime that included lots of glitter on trees. Our pantomime was beautiful visually , as a story and musically , not least that Patricia Routledge played Prince charming and could sing most beautifully . It was clear to all the cast that Pat , as we called her , was destined for greater things . Bagnall Harris was a quiet reserved man , always behind the scenes , he was a vivacious painter with a great sense of colour and painted the most beautiful sets .
