Andrew Gagg

Andrew was born in Warsop, Nottinghamshire on 21st December 1940.
His early education was attributable largely to his father, who was also his Head Teacher. His subsequent Grammar School education was at the King’s School, Peterborough.
He obtained a Degree in Art & Design at the Brighton College of Art and Crafts.
While working at the Wigan School of Art, he became involved with amateur theatre (and with June, his first wife) at the Wigan Little Theatre, designing several successful productions.
Worked for Duncan C Weldon for a season around 1968 as an ASM at the Pavilion Theatre, Lytham St Annes. (It was the year that Duncan married Helen Shapiro.)
Design Assistant (together with June) at Crewe Theatre in weekly rep. 1968 -9. Ted Craig the Artistic Director and Gavin Mitchell as Head of Design.
Head of Design at Crewe 1969–70. Now doing fortnightly Rep.
Next came an all-too-brief spell at the opening of Leeds Playhouse as Design Assistant to the late, great Brian Currah.
Assisted Kenneth Turner on a couple of Panto productions, and designed a number of Repertory shows for The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. 1970 -1972
In 1972 he was Guest Designer at the Connaught, Worthing for a couple of shows. ‘The Ghost Train’ a great success, while ‘The Hollow’ was fraught with technical problems!
Head of Design at the Castle Theatre Farnham from 1973 to 1974, during which time he created many sets for their fortnightly repertory, while later assisting in the preparations for the opening of the Redgrave including his designs for the opening show.
‘Romeo & Juliet’ opened the Redgrave in May 1974, to somewhat mixed reviews from some of the Nationals, although the set seemed to please.
In a major change of direction, in 1976 Andrew started as an Assistant Designer for the BBC at Pebble Mill, working on period dramas such as ‘Poldark’, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ ‘The Phoenix and the Carpet’ (the earlier production of this title), ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, ‘East Lynne’ and ‘David Copperfield’. As a Production Designer he created sets for the catwalk show ‘Clothes Show Live’ for a number of years, as well as seemingly endless versions of the set for Noel Edmonds ‘Telly Addicts’ over quite a period of time.
Retiring from the BBC in 1996 after a semi-respectable twenty years there, he took up residence in Worcester with his wife Christine where they now live ‘in comfortable obscurity’. (Why break the habit of a lifetime?).
His main interests now are Food, Photography, Travel (when possible) and the creation of Audio-Visual sequences.
