- To Royal Shakespeare Company production of As You Like It, by William Shakespeare, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, 12th June 1973 (press night): “As it might happen … On our honeymoon, we took in AS YOU LIKE IT (Stratford Upon Avon) in 1973. I was charmed by Eileen Atkins as Rosalind, and David Suchet as Orlando (although we’re not Dame Eileen Atkins and David Suchet yet). I had not studied AS YOU LIKE IT, so I hurriedly read the play. A year later I included AS YOU LIKE IT as the 25th and last book for my doctoral entrance orals. I was asked what significance the Garden of Arden played in the meaning of the play. I did not remember the Garden of Arden in the Stratford production. Later I discovered that there was no representation of Arden in this spare production. So, no recollection possible for a neophyte. I was entranced, however, by Eileen Atkins and David Suchet, a fascination that has only grown with time. The other day I suggested to one of my granddaughters that she should (she’s 9 now) remember to not miss reading AS YOU LIKE IT when the time arrives. I told her Rosalind was my ideal woman from Shakespeare, but I was thinking that my granddaughter has the the same impish intelligence as Rosalind.”
