Last five observations
- To National Theatre production of The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, The Old Vic, London, 19th January - ? 1965: “In his autobiography Timebends, Arthur Miller mentions how his visit to Salem to see the town records for 1692, and studying the words of interrogation, helped Lawrence Olivier with this production. It was about the choice of dialect that would be as close to the original speech as possible. Miller’s commented that while reading the records he thought it was ‘a gnarled way of speaking’. Miller and Olivier corresponded, and Olivier ‘After much research he decided on a Northumberland dialect, which indeed is spoken through clenched jaws.’ (Quotes from: Arthur Miller, Timebends: A Life, published by Bloomsbury in 2012, page 336)”
