Last five observations
- To production of No Time for Comedy, by S N Behrman, Theatre Royal, Haymarket, London, 27th March 1941 - 24th January 1942: “I have a lovely unpublished 1940/1 diary of Esme Nicoll (friend of Agatha Christie), who regularly goes to the theatre when she is staying in London for her work at St Thomas Hospital. I haven’t finished transcribing the diary yet but this may well be one of the plays she goes to see. The diary is full of wartime references so it is extraordinary that the theatres continued during that turbulent time.”
- To production of Swinging the Gate Revue, by Robert MacDermot and Diana Morgan, Ambassadors Theatre, London, 22nd May - 7th September 1940: “I have a brilliant unpublished diary of Esme Nicoll 1940 covering numerous aspects of the war in England. On 17 August the diarist attends a performance of Swinging The Gate, after an eventful train journey from Devon to London. She says of it “not very good”!”
