The Crimes of Burke and Hare
At Brixton, this production was advertised as THE WOLVES OF TANNER’S CLOSE; OR, THE CRIMES OF BURKE AND HARE. At the New Theatre, it was advertised under the same title initially but the subtitle seems to have quickly taken precedence.
The production competed directly with James Bridie’s handling of the same story, THE ANATOMIST (qv), at the Westminster Theatre. At the New, Burke and Hare were replaced for matinee performances (from 26th December) by TREASURE ISLAND, with Tod Slaughter as Long John Silver.
