Short Eyes

UK premiere of Miguel Piñero’s 1974 play.

SHORT EYES has real and gripping qualities. The portraits of the eight convicts, an uneasy racial mix of whites, blacks and Puerto Ricans, are achieved with vivid economy and Piñero compellingly suggests what life is like for those whom society has chosen to lock away … The Man in the Moon is an ideal venue for the production since it is probably more claustrophobically uncomfortable than the average jail. Once the action has started the only way out is over the tiny stage, so the audience are in effect prisoners themselves.” – Charles Spencer, The Stage 11th October 1984
