Broken Voices
Philip Larkin was quite clear on the negative influences on our lives – but is it just our parents? Peer pressure, school, parents, society, friends – all play their role. We hear too much of child crime, from knifings to assaults, and too readily jump to conclusions. When a group of teenagers are punished on a school trip, their detention seems little more than a boring interlude until a new boy is sent to join them. Matters deteriorate as every member of the group is made to examine themselves. ‘Talking Heads’ meets ‘Lord of the Flies’. <s>*</s> <s>*</s><s>*</s><s>*</s><s>*</s>(ThreeWeeks, 2009).
