Donkeys’ Years

Discouraging initial tour dates were followed by a ten-week hiatus (during which, alterations included the removal of a second interval) and then a 19-month West End run. (See PUTTING IT ON by Michael Codron and Allan Strachan, pages 274–77.)

A J Brown died on 29th January 1978, having given his last performance as Birkett the night before. “This play will run longer than I will,” he had predicted. (See ‘Obituary’, The Stage 9th February 1978, page 22.)
