The Cherry Orchard

In Chekhov’s last play a family face up to losing their beloved cherry orchard, ‘the one remarkable feature in this whole district’. Everyone must choose how best to adapt to a world where the old values are being swept away. Chekhov is one of the all-time great playwrights but too often productions don’t serve him well. Characters either wander about languidly bemoaning their lot, or career around as self-obsessed grotesques. We will strike the balance between poignancy and comedy and present people that are as real now as they were at the beginning of the 20th century.
