Dead on Nine
NOTES from the previous production about BIRTHDAY HONOURS as written by Jonathan Meddings
Jack Popplewell is a playwright who has that rare of being able to please practically everybody. His first major success as a dramatist came with the light, farcical comedies BUSYBODY and GOODNIGHT MRS. PUFFIN. Both these plays provided Irene Handl with her biggest successes. From comedy he turned his hand to writing a ‘thriller’ (a field of play-writing that has been left very much to the prolific talents of Agatha Christie), but, again, Jack Popplewell hit the jackpot. DEAD ON NINE was produced and became an instant West End success. The play has subsequently been seen in every large city in this country where it has played to packed audiences. The brilliantly contrived double murder plot is most cleverly developed and the suspense is superbly sustained right to the surprisingly neat finish. Apart from being first-class holiday entertainment, this thriller provides a really good evening’s theatre-going.
