Charles Fulton

Charles John Foss (who acted under the stagename Charles Fulton) was born in Kent in 1857. He was the second-youngest son of solicitor and biographer Edward Foss. Edward was 72 years old when Charles was born and it seems that in his dotage this respectable gentleman let his younger children lapse into disreputable pursuits such as acting.

Harcourt Williams’ history of The Old Vic, “Old Vic Saga” (1949), reports that “Fulton had a magnificent, deep voice which he could use very wittily in comedy as well as in more serious matter. But then all the family had good voices. There was a brother [Frederick Foss] who was once Mayor of Croydon, and as a boy I used to hear him coming out of his house a quarter of a mile away!”.

Charles’ brother was George R. Foss, Producer at The Old Vic from 1918 to 1919. His nephew (George’s son) was Alan Foss, actor and director with The Old Vic from the age of 15.
