Walter Cassel

A Metropolitan Opera baritone, one of the great singing actors of his day. In 1958 Cassel set a new record at the metropolitan by singing three of the most taxing roles in the baritone repertoire within twenty-four hours: Scarpia in “Tosca”, Kurvenal in “Tristan & Isolde” and Jokanaan in “Salome”. During the 1964–65 season, the baritone sang the unheard of number of eleven performances as “The Flying Dutchman” in New York and on the Met’s tour. In 1964 he made his European debut with the Zurich Opera as Jokanaan in “Salome”. From there he went to the Deutsche Opera am Rheim in Dusseldorf where he appeared in a wide variety of roles.
