Celia Salkeld

Celia Salkeld was born in Dublin. Her father Cecil ffrench Salkeld ARHA was a well known painter and also founded the The Irish National Ballet School. Celia’s sister Beatrice, also a painter married the playwright Brendan Behan. Celia entered the theatre world in her mid teens mostly acting on the Irish radio “Radio Eireann” She joined The Dublin Reperatory Theatre in 1955 together with her then partner the Stage Designer and artist Reginald Gray on a year long tour of Ireland. Her leading roles included “The Man in the Green Coat” by Arthur Frewen, “A Slipper for the Moon” Michael Mac Liammoir, and most notably the role of Teresa in Brendan Behan’s “The Hostage” both in the London and Broadway productions
