Observations
-
Val Gielgud, writing in Years of the Locust, recalls being invited to produce this play and that it ‘had hardly the constituents of popular success, for it dealt with post-classical Greece and her barbarian neighbours’. However he also noted that it later became Naomi Mitchison’s greatest novel, The Corn King and the Spring Queen. The actors included Julian Huxley, novelist Helen Simpson and Val’s younger brother, John Gielgud.
