- To production of The Pier, by James Forsyth, Bristol Old Vic - Theatre Royal, 1957 - 1958: “My Mother was one of a group of young people which James Forsyth based his play The Pier on. She often talks about the impact being part of the creative process had on her and how generous Mr Forsyth and his wife were with their time. My Mother was resident at a boarding school for young people who had experienced challenges in their childhood in the 1950’s. The Forsyth’s encouraged and supported my Mother’s peer group in being involved in all aspects of the production. The young people were taken several hundred miles from their boarding school to watch the production, a huge adventure in itself at the time. She has kept her signed programme and at 77 years of age, still makes reference to it. Whilst the play seems not to have had great reviews it served a far greater purpose in giving these young people opportunities and experiences they would never have had otherwise.”
