Last five observations
- To Tyneside Theatre Company production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, by Tom Stoppard, University Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne, started 10th February 1972: “The programme design (by Simon Garbutt) includes caricatures by Michael Attwell of himself (as Guildenstern) and Peter Mayock (as Rosencrantz).”
- To Tyneside Theatre Company production of Faust - the musical, by Michael Bogdanov, Terry Mortimer, and Jamie Reid, Gulbenkian Studio, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 29th February - 11th March 1972: “Performance dates given on poster as 29 Feb–11 March (no year, but 1972 was a leap year; there was no Feb 29 in 1973)”
- To Tyneside Theatre Company production of Faust - the musical, by Michael Bogdanov, Terry Mortimer, and Jamie Reid, Gulbenkian Studio, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 29th February - 11th March 1972: “Poster design by Simon Garbutt. So far as I can remember there was no programme as such (possibly a cast list).”
- To Tyneside Theatre Company production of Faust - the musical, by Michael Bogdanov, Terry Mortimer, and Jamie Reid, Gulbenkian Studio, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 29th February - 11th March 1972: “I assume this is an experimental forerunner of the play later staged at The Young Vic. Bogdanov often revisited his earlier productions with new ideas.”
- To Tyneside Theatre Company production of What the Butler Saw, by Joe Orton, University Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne, started 5th April 1973: “The poster and front of programme design (by Simon Garbutt) is mainly typographical, featuring lettering between a discarded bra and pants. (It was also later used, initially without permission, for a production at Theatr Clwyd, Mold.) The programme’s inner images are of four of the main characters: Geraldine Barclay (Charmian Dore), Nicholas Beckett (David Rintoul), Sgt. Match (Michael Mould) and Mrs. Prentice (Janet Amsden). By flipping over one or two of the three flaps cut into the page they can be made to swap parts of their costumes, reflecting the farcical nature of the plot. The illustrations were based on photographs of the cast members and the designer’s costume sketches.”
