- To Royal Shakespeare Company production of Toad of Toad Hall, by A A Milne, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, 3rd January 1972 (press night): “I remember this production with affection. I was playing in band and recall the late, great Michael Williams, dressed as mole, approaching the pit (as the edge of the river bank) before the start of the dress rehearsal. He made as if to undo his fly explaining ‘I’ve just been in hibernation for months and I’m bursting for a pee!’ This revival was conducted by Guy Woolfenden’s assistant, Mike Tubbs, who appeared in the pit on the final night dressed as a fox! The following year a second production was conducted by Stephen Hancock who died earlier this month. He was an actor who had trained as a musician and was well known at the time as Ernie Bishop, the husband of Emily in ‘Coronation Street’. I was leading the orchestra on this occasion and managed to get hold of the band parts to the soap’s theme tune. On the final night we played it as Stephen entered the pit and, as the audience saw him take his bow, it received him with thunderous applause! Guy, who with a large section of the Royal Shakespeare Company was touring Japan at the time, threatened me with the sack on his return!”
