Towards the end of the production, there was a dramatically effective scene in which the ensemble created a splendid hullabaloo in which each individual actor represented a different religion, eg Myra McFadyen personifying the Wee Free Kirk o’ Scotland. I attended a matinee in summer 1996 at TOP; and there was an untoward “incident”. The Wee Free woman expressed vehement outrage at the miniskirt which my niece was wearing and tugged at the hem, trying to cover exposed knees and about four inches of bare leg. Unfortunately, the skirt material was quite stretchy. Once released, it sprang back, riding up to expose considerably more bare flesh. Once outside TOP, we were deciding where to go next for food while the cast were still emerging. The lady herself made a special point of coming over to apologise for the unintended consequences of her performance. A charming gesture.
