The Caretaker

The Caretaker is probably Pinter’s best known and arguably his greatest play.

Set in a chaotic room in a decaying house, the drama centres on the newcomer, Davies, an evasive and irascible old tramp and the two brothers who apparently own the property – the disturbing Aston and his intimidating brother, Mick. As Davies attempts to exploit first one and then another brother, the play becomes a struggle for dominance between the three. Pinter’s dialogue captures both the menace and the humour of this absurd situation.
