Play description

Conditions in England after the Napoleonic Wars were very harsh, and revolutionary plotting was rife. In June 1817, the villagers of Pentrich were led to believe that the planned rebellion had started. They gathered up arms and marched on Nottingham, expecting to be met by “a great cloud of men from the North”. They sent ahead George Weightman to seek news from Nottingham. “The Eastwood rebel” is based on this incident.
The story takes place in the parlour of Matthew Taylor;s farm-worker’s cottage.
