Grand Guignol (season 4)
A fourth series of Granville Grand Guignol (advertised as ‘Laughter – Passion – Horror – Vengeance’), comprising HAVE A HEART by H F Maltby, THE MONKEY’S PAW by W W Jacobs, PROGRESS by St John Ervine, and THE BITTER END by Frederick Witney.
In October, Edith Sharpe and Nicholas Grimshaw were replaced by Cicely Paget-Bowman and Lionel Stevens respectively.
“This [HAVE A HEART] provides a splendid vehicle for Tod Slaughter. Appearing as a sadistic middle-aged biologist who polishes off his young male ward, the lover of his young wife, Mr Slaughter is benignly menacing throughout … Finally, he regales the infidel woman on the heart and flesh of the young man. She rejoices in her involuntary act of cannibalism, enjoying with relish the succulent dish, which is pressed on her with unaccustomed consideration by her husband.” – ‘The Granville: Grand Guignol’, The Stage 27th September 1945 (page 1)
