Dr. Syn’s Christmas, 1793
This was the second play in a three-part seasonal portmanteau called CHRISTMAS PIE. Advertised as ‘Edible for Young and Old’, the other items were A CHRISTMAS CAROL and PUNCH AND JUDY. A previous Thorndike-Trechman play, ORIGINALLY SYN – described as ‘a Battle of Britain version of [Thorndike’s] DR SYN’ – was announced for touring in December 1944 but didn’t happen. Thorndike and Trechman then wrote THE RETURN OF DR SYN, produced at Windsor in November 1947 (qv).
