The Angry Deep
Set in Malta during World War II, this production was intended to open in the West End in February 1961 but didn’t get there.
Four pigs appeared on stage, playing submarine mascots called Zsa Zsa, Tallulah, Vera and Bessy – but not in Newcastle and Glasgow, where, “owing to foot-and-mouth restrictions”, dummies were used instead. (‘Chit Chat’, The Stage 26th January 1961, page 8.)
