Mother Courage and her Children
This was a highly praised production of the ground breaking multi-racial and multi-national performance of Brecht`s masterpiece in the UK ; a cast which included well known Pakistani actor Renu Setna , Chezch Milos Kirek, French Yves Aubert, mixed race Josephine Welcome, Joseph Long, and the South African actress of Greek descent Angelique Rockas. Directed by Peter Stevenson, fresh out of the RSC collaborating with John Barton .
The production was not only praised for tackling the huge restrictions of staging an epic play in the underground basement of the old Charing Cross hospital , managing to hold the audience`s attention for 3 hours with its finely detailed rendering of a `densely argued and emotionally explosive text` , Tom Vaughan , but also for its powerful central performance of Margaret Robertson as Mother Courage.
Many critics considered that the multi-racial and multi- national casting brought outnew textures and enriched the performance , Time Out`s Malcolm Hay was appalled that a Pakistani actor with a Pakistani accent was playing a Swedish Chaplain.
Time Out was requested to withdraw its offensive racist remarks by Angelique Rockas, the founder of this company .
