Any production of this opera is a major event – in WNO’s new production Bryn Terfel makes his role debut as Hans Sachs, the shoemaker and poet who is at its very heart.

Renowned for his performances of German opera, WNO’s Music Director Lothar Koenigs will conduct. Richard Jones returns to WNO to direct this opera for the first time. His previous three productions for the company, Hansel and Gretel, The Queen of Spades and Wozzeck have all won major awards and have been critically praised.

Cast includes Bryn Terfel as Hans Sachs, Amanda Roocroft as Eva, Christopher Purves as Beckmesser, Brindley Sherratt as Pogner, Raymond Very as Walther Von Stolzing, Andrew Tortise as David and James Rutherford as Kothner.

Sung in German with subtitles in English with an electronic subtitles screen above the stage carrying a translation in English.
