I was a stage hand at the Rep at the time of the canal show. Of the cast I remember Paul Henry. We played it in the studio and, I believe, we took it out around the Black Country, Brierley Hill rings a bell. At the end of the studio run the Rep invited the local canal folk and after the show they took us all out for a nighttime narrow boat cruise around the city. I have never been so drunk in my life and I still have no idea how I got home. I’ve sung the song ‘Birmingham Lads’ so often that my wife now believes she knows the song well…
