Sweet Bird of Card Street
Sweet Bird of Card Street was staged at the same time as Arthur Berry’s first one-man Retrospective Exhibition of paintings at the Stoke City Museum and Art Gallery from 17 September to October 27th 1984. The author says of the play “My earliest life was all spent in that kind of cocoon of bricks, where the end of the street was the end of the world – a closed world – and the next street was alien territory. That’s what this play is about. Card Street and many more like don’t exist anymore. In the play I bow to its passing …Now the area is covered with pink council houses, and they don’t look the same.”
