The Pitmen Painters

Starting in the mid-1930s, Hall introduces us to what initially appears to be a drab group of miners attending a Workers’ Educational Association meeting in Ashington, Northumberland. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, they begin to paint – prolifically. Their work is later acquired by prestigious collectors, while they continue to work down the mine.
