Song of Eudocia

Unjustly accused of adultery, the Empress of Byzantium, Aelia Eudocia, is forced into exile. As she journeys towards her new home in Jerusalem, she visits the world-renowned holy man, Simeon Stylites, atop his famous pillar in the Syrian mountains. Her dramatic monologue interweaves the story of her life with the intellectual traditions of Greece. Eudocia’s song builds towards a plea for guidance and the possibility of resolution with her change of fortune. This exciting and wholly original new poem by writer Christopher Towl has its debut at this year’s festival.
