Maxie
Les Hull’s sparkling play gives an insight into the extraordinary life and times of the legendary comedian Max Miller. It traces his meteoric rise to fame from poverty to stardom, serving in the First World War, marrying a singer (who became his manager), making several films, continuing to perform during the Second World War, becoming a radio and recording star until his death in 1963. A long time before the advent of ‘alternative comedy’, the ‘Cheeky Chappie’ became controversial by puncturing the veneer of public respectability, prevalent at the time, with his unique risque style. ‘There’ll never be another’ quite like our Maxie.
