The Doctor and the Devils
In this adaptation, Dylan Thomas’ characters (Rock, Fallon, Broom, Billy Bedlam, Jenny Bailey etc) were given their historical names (Knox, Burke, Hare, Daft Jamie, Mary Paterson etc).
Gervase Farjeon and Richard O’Donoghue originally had plans to stage this play in the West End, but these didn’t come to fruition. (‘Dylan Thomas play for the West End’, The Stage 23rd November 1961, page 1.)
The transfer to Sunderland marked the reopening of the Empire after a three-year closure and refurbishment.
