The Singular Mystery of the Princess Caraboo

A play by

the play is largely set in the village of Almondsbury near Bristol. It is an extraordinary true story of a poor girl who became the toast of Regency society by posing as a South Sea Island princess cast ashore in the Severn Estuary. The real Princess Caraboo’s fame was short-lived: she died in poverty, scraping a living as a leech gatherer and is buried in Bristol, where you might also find her portrait (by one of the foremost portrait artists of her day) hanging in the museum.
