Woman in a Dressing Gown

In 1963 this was the best attended production of the year at the New Theatre, Bromley. (‘Top ten at Bromley’: The Stage 30th January 1964, page 16.) At Bromley and the subsequent 1963 venues, Sylvia Syms was cast in the role she’d played in the 1957 film on which the play was based.

The 1964 Vaudeville transfer involved a change in director and several of the actors, Syms included. The first West End venture for Kent Plays Ltd (a company set up by Ted Willis, Peter Sellers and film producer Sydney Box), it was taken off after only 14 performances and some highly unfavourable reviews. (See David Nathan, ‘Oh lord, Ted, how familiar’: 20th February 1964, page 5 / DFB, ‘This sob story lacks dramatic bite’: The Stage 27th February 1964, page 13.)
