Bahok: Dance

Akram Khan Company and the National Ballet of China present

Bahok

As part of Birmingham’s first International Dance Festival, award-winning Akram Khan brings his new collaboration with flagship company the National Ballet of China to The REP. Joining forces with long-time collaborators Hanif Kureishi and Nitin Sawhnay, Akram Khan has created a company of nine dancers from different cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds: Chinese, Korean, Indian, South African and Spanish.

Bahok (meaning ‘carrier’ in Bengali) explores ways in which national identity and belonging are ingrained in, and communicated through, the body. Through dance, the performers bring together different languages, both verbal and physical, to find a shared language with which to communicate their experiences, the memories of their original homes, the dreams and aspirations that made them move.

They are carriers. They are bahok.
