Enemies
Internationalist Theatre (previously called New Internationalist Theatre) was an associate producer, with Ann Pennington of the Richard Steele Theatre, of this multi-national performance of Gorky’s ENEMIES – a play about workers’ unrest in Tsarist Russia that had political resonances in the UK of 1985, wracked by the miners’ strike.
Tom Vaughn of the Morning Star: “A great revolutionary play performed with revolutionary passion and style.”
BBC Russian Service took a different view of Gorky’s populism, but praised Pennington’s directing style.
