Jubilee Girl

A very troubled musical that started its pre London tour at Bristol on 6th March 1956 and ended it in Manchester on 12th May 1956 with many changes of cast and creative personnel along the way. Cast and crew thought this was the end for the show but it got an unexpected booking at the Victoria Palace Theatre, playing twice nightly.

Kim Grant, one of the few surviving cast members to make it to London, later detailed some of the casualties along the way:-

Leslie Henson due to play The Duke of Epping never got past the rehearsal stage. He bailed out and was replaced by George Benson. Tom Criddle as Lord Graine was replaced by John Morley and Irene Handl as Mrs Pullar was replaced by Iris Tully. The original Director and Choreographer Bert Stimmel was sacked and replaced by Alfred Rodrigues who in turn was replaced by Leslie Bricusse and Frederic Raphael who also attempted to re-write the show. Peter Darrell was brought in to prvovide new dances and by the time the show reached the Victoria Palace yet two more directors were brought on board – George Hall and Casper Wrede. Marie Lohr and Lizbeth Webb both passed on going to the Victoria Palace.
