Observations

I As an 11-year-old Finnish girl I was lucky enough to have a mother who worked as a teacher of English in various towns in Finland. My mother always took me with her to London during the school summer holidays, in1965 for the first time.
Mum was extremely interested in performing arts, particularly the theatre. So, in 1965 both she and I were keen to see what kind of Finnish country life we would see when performed by Brits! I still remember what the sauna scene looked like: Mr. Puntila and his servant beating each other with leafless twigs! But Finnish sauna is supposed to give pleasure, not torture: we gently touch our bodies with fragrant branches of birch tree branches in full leaf. Besides, we are so egalitarian that there are only farmers in Finland, so the title “Squire” is a bit wrong.
