The American Clock

“…I knew we had a long bad time ahead of us. And so, like most people, I waited with that crazy kind of expectation that comes when there is no hope, waited for the dream to come back from wherever it had gone to hide.

… But there’s never been a society that hasn’t had a clock running on it and you couldn’t help wondering – how long? How long would they stand for this?”

The American Clock by Arthur Miller is based, in part, on Studs Terkel’s Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression.
