The Unicorn Players score another hit at Paignton this week with a thriller—by Philip Mackie—“The Big Killing.” Being presented at the Palace Avenue Theatre for the next few days, the play has all the necessary ingredients for those who enjoy watching a “perfect murder” plot unfold. Neil Phelps takes the role of the killer, Peter Ashbury—a young man who is looking for excitement. He makes cunning use of his friends, and his wife, to provide him with what he thinks is a water-tight alibi. The scheme starts when his landlord, Charles Hatcher, competently played by Howard Lamb, is enticed by Ashbury to make a bet while he is drunk. The following day he realises that the bet that Ashbury could not kill his (Barcher’s) wife, was foolish, and he asks Ashbury rip up the paper on which it is written. But by then it is too late. Gilda Perry is impressive as Ashby’s wife, Mary, and Pamela Munday is first-class as the murder victim. Bill Smale takes the part of Gavin Cole, a neighbour, and James Mooney plays Police-insp. Fowler. Nora, the maid, and Police-Sgt Bassett are played by Penni Gaegan and David Rogers.
