Watch It, Sailor!
“WATCH IT, SAILOR! was first produced on tour in the autumn of last year, directed by AndrĂ© Van Gyseghem. Owing to a previous professional commitment in South Africa, Mr Van Gyseghem was not able to attend the final rehearsals for the West End presentation and these have been directed by Mr Henry Kendall.” – programme note
This production’s first night at the Apollo was also its 300th performance. It had moved from the Aldwych to make way for the newly launched Royal Shakespeare Company.
When Marjorie Rhodes took over from Kathleen Harrison in May 1961, Rhodes had recently finished playing the same role in the film version.
A novelisation was published by W H Allen in April 1961. The author was Shiela Steen – whose husband, R C Liebman, was the play’s PR man.
